Bland County Police Records and FOIA Rules

Virginia FOIA gives the public a right to inspect and copy most police records. Under Virginia Code Section 2.2-3706.1, criminal incident information is open for felony cases. That means a general description of the crime, the date, the location, the name of the officer, and a short note on injuries or property loss. The Sheriff's Office must reply within five working days. The reply may grant the request, deny it with a reason, or ask for more time.

Some records stay closed. Files tied to open cases, juvenile records, and the names of confidential informants can be held back. If your request is denied, the office must tell you which exemption applies. You can appeal a denial in the Bland County Circuit Court. You can also contact the Virginia FOIA Council for help.
